Coyote Hunting is an education… As we progressed in the sport we started purchasing more and more equipment. I purchased a custom rifle that was very expensive and a tack driver! Then I made a huge mistake. I removed the stock without torquing the stock back down and checking my zero.On this particular hunt was the next weekend after my mishap. Poor Uriah Wurst and myself didn’t realize that this tack driver was driving tacks off target! This custom gun was the kind of weapon that you hit whatever you had in the cross hairs of your scope. After the first miss with a rifle like this you naturally blame yourself for shanking the shot.

It took a couple of coyotes coming in to our call before we realized something was wrong. The only coyote taken this day was with a shotgun. We referred to this coyote as “the 55 mph coyote”. On this hunt we started calling and before we could even get the camera recording the coyote was coming in on a dead run. We had stuck an e-call at the edge of a prairie dog hole playing a prairie dog distress.

The coyote came in on the run and I actually took it as it jumped the hole at full speed with the shotgun. There was no way I could of done this with a scoped rifle. It was a spectacular hunt that wasn’t caught on film… This is how it goes when you start filming coyote hunts.

The last coyote hunt on this video was picture perfect. A coyote came to Uriah’s call. We were set up at some old corrals next to an old barn we call the skunk shack. You might say it has a distinct odor.

This coyote came in like a fish on a string. Then Uriah pulled the trigger only to miss. It was high and right. It was only after getting back home and watching the hunt videos that I could confirm that something was wrong. All I had to do was lock-tight the stalk and put it back to it’s original torque and it was confirmed back to zero.

You have to admit it still makes good video. I would always like to see a clean miss than a bad hit.
