Coyote Hunting Video 4 with Bucking The Odds
Watching this coyote hunting video really brought back the memories. We took a trip to the plains of Eastern Colorado to try and call in a coyote. The drive takes us a couple of hours, so we decided to take my old pull behind camper. The logical spot to camp was a State Wildlife Area. It was centrally located near most of the private area we hunt. We really coyote hunt a lot of good country out there so we really didn’t take the State Wildlife Area very serious. We joked around and called it a State No Wildlife Area. We thought that there were probably hunters on it all the time. It really wasn’t that big a piece of ground.
Our plan was to wake up in the morning and drive to the nearest private ground and start calling in some coyotes. To our surprise we woke up to the sound of coyote vocals. Then there was a mad dash to get all of our hunting gear on and get out the door. There wasn’t time for coffee that morning. You could see it in the video by how puffy me eyes were. Once we were out of the camper we were again discouraged by the fact that we had our camper in plain sight. Our only chance was to roll around a hill and hope a coyote would come from a good direction that would give us an advantage.
The next obstacle was to try and find some busy terrain to blend in to. We were fortunate that there was a few yucca plants and sporadic brush on the side hill. After getting settled in on our coyote stand we turned on an e-call and set back. It wasn’t long and we spotted a lone coyote coming in from below us. We could of swore that it should have been able to spot our camp, but it just kept on coming.
We had the MOJO Critter set out in front of us with the e-caller just below it at low volume. We use this combination to build a coyotes confidence. Sometimes you can do everything right, but the coyote will hang up because they either don’t hear the call anymore, don’t see anything to confirm what they heard, or simply look right at the hunter blowing the coyote call. The coyote ended up stopping about 15 yards from the decoy. It very well could have crossed our scent or smelt something in the air from the decoy it didn’t like.
The good news is it still was curious long enough to keep looking right at the decoy. This was good because I was using Uriah’s AR-15 that I hadn’t used much. Low and behold I forgot to take it off safety. The AR let out a loud click as I put it in the fire position. The coyote then looked straight at me. I was sure I only had an instant to lock in and take the shot.
