This was the second coyote we were able to call in after returning from the Comanche National Grasslands. Uriah had to play with a tarantula before heading back to Notellem Creek. They don’t bother me, but I certainly don’t like them crawling on me.
This coyote responded to the call immediately from upwind. The good news is it spotted the MOJO Critter decoy and was very interested in hanging around. The hard part was the coyote was able to move around a low area that made it difficult for Uriah to get a shot off.
At one point we were convinced the coyote was going to run down wind of us. The coyote couldn’t take it and came back to our upwind location to take another look at the MOJO Critter and gave Uriah a chance to shoot.
You will notice on this coyote hunt that Uriah gets a little frustrated when we thought Uriah missed the coyote. This is another advantage of filming your hunts. We were able to watch the film back and discover that the shot was good. Uriah looked around for a while and found the coyote laying over the top of a yucca plant.
This coyote hunt shows how important a decoy and an electronic caller at low volume can be. It kept the coyotes attention and gave Uriah a chance to move and position himself for the shot. Coyotes are clever, so you need every trick you know to have more success at coyote hunting.

I love watching your guys videos, I am also a avid coyote hunter, I’ve been hunting them for about nine years now here in southern Utah, I would like to ask a couple of question , Have you ever experienced lows in hunting dogs and by that I mean have you ever gone a long period of time of not getting any in? I had an extremely good year in 2007-2008 and has slowly diminished, but as I talk to people there going through the same thing. This years youth comp had 60 teams, the winner only got two dogs, there was only 8 out of everybody taken, And that got me thinking. Are coyotes on the same type of life cycle say for instance rabbits? Anyways thanks for taking the time to read this, and keep making awsome videos.
Sean, St George Utah
Yes we have. This year we haven’t had the response that we did last year on some of our favorite properties. We have also noticed a lot more pressure on some of the properties. We still don’t have enough pull to get exclusive rights to these properties.
I do think populations fluctuate, we had a great year, lots of coyotes. Then we noticed and heard about some mangy coyotes, the following year was slow. I think that mange thins out the population, allowing the prey numbers to grow, this gives plenty of food for the coyote numbers to increase.
Mange is one thing that we haven’t seen out here, or in Nevada. We do have a lot of jack and cotton tail out here right now, so I know there not starving, But we also have quite a few more hunters so I have to drive further and further out, I prefer using my mouth calls, but I might be looking at getting a fox pro only because of the large variety of distress sounds Maybe the yotes are getting sick of the rabbit distress.
Hey Sean, It’s nice to see someone else on here from Southern Utah, I live in Hurricane. How long have you been hunting coyotes? This will be my second year of hitting them hard. I have noticed that there are not a lot of coyotes that come to the call. I have a Foxpro Fx3 that I really like, it plays great sounds. I also use mouth calls. I think most of the problem that we are having in our area is the coyote hunters ( including myself ) are out educating them. I don’t think there is any mange around here at least none that I have seen or heard of. But, I could be wrong.
This is my first post. Hi all. Here in Southern Idaho, I have personally seen parvo take many a dogs lives, particularly two years ago. Now they have been on a steady increase since.
Now that’s funny!
have you guys ever hunted in canada? we have lots of dogs here. come on up and lets have at her.
to add to my previous comment. get the buck up here and lets go huntin dogs
I would love to come up and hunt coyotes in Canada! You all have some big coyotes up there.
Im from Northwest Iowa and this is my first year coyote hunting. Ive been using primos vocal calls and would it be worth investing in a fox pro or something along those lines? But I enjoy using the vocal calls. Ive been using my 30/30 lever action iron sights and my 12 gauge. I hunt hard and enjoy the sport! Any recommendations on a varmint hunting rifle? Any tips for first time hunters?
I have already learned a lot from watching videos and I’m pumped to be a member! Thanks!
Thanks! I am glad BuckingTheOdds.com has been some help.

I agree it must be natures balancing act. We have seen mange two years in a row. Sure slowed us down this year.
Ive been looking for some long bi-pods not sticks, my harris pods just arent long enough. I need some good quality ones . Need a push in the right direction. I went on line ( versa-pod ) nothing over 27″ ??
yeah you guys have an amazing setup! i never thought about using a tall bipod like that…What size (how many inches are you guys using? ive looked at harris and the tallest i see is 27 inches and your guys’ bipods look taller.
I believe ours is 29″ Versa-Pod and was purchased at Midway. Hope this helps.
I am in Middle Tennessee In an area overrun with dogs that nobody hunts! Last month stopping by my neighbors farm I saw two mangled dead newborn calves. He said that vultures had killed them! I checked the spot. It was Coyotes! I have seen but never killed one. I’m getting a GOOD crossbow this year and getting me some dogs. (Too densely populated there for High-powered rifles).
fastened two arrow shafts to the the ends of my Harris bipod with blunts on the ends, works pretty well.
