This coyote hunting video was exciting because we had hunted the National Grasslands for a couple of days with little results. This sometimes happens with coyote hunting. It may have been the lunar phase or the many hunters running around in orange that had the coyote activity slowed down. We decided to head back to our local coyote hunting country where we were familiar with the coyote activity. It was slow there also, but we were able to call in a coyote on a slow day.
This video illustrates the disadvantage of coyote hunting out west in the plains. The terrain is static with very little feature to blend into. We like a cluster of rocks or brush or even a single tree to nestle in. The terrain we are hunting offers very little of this. We do have one advantage. We use King’s Dessert Shadow camouflage and the Quikcamo hat with a drop down face mask. In a busy terrain the coyote isn’t very likely to pick us out. When there is no terrain features to blend in to, the coyotes come in a little slower, but they continue to come in. They don’t know what you are. If a coyote thought you were human for a split second they would be leaving your location at a dead run.
Coyote Hunting tip: On many occasions we have coyotes look directly at us with suspicion but dismiss us after they realize we aren’t showing movement. I guess they just think we are a log or clump and continue to pursue the rabbit in distress. This is all we need to close the deal. In busy terrain you may not be noticed in good camouflage, but if you don’t have the advantage and are noticed, make sure you don’t look like a human.
This hunt was a lot of fun for us, and hopefully will be a lot of fun for you. We have another video that will be coming out soon!
