Our third coyote hunting video was what we thought was our first video success. We had been really working hard at getting a good solid hunts on film. There wasn’t anything that we didn’t do wrong at least once. You might say we had bruises on our thighs from punching our self in the leg. When everything lined up perfectly on other hunts it seemed like we always made a mistake. We would get so excited that we wouldn’t push record, or just simply throw the camera in the dirt, because we were so afraid that we would miss the coyote. We had made up our minds that we were going to go to one of our favorite spots in the mountains of Colorado and really make a solid effort at getting at least one good coyote hunt on film. We had a lot of success calling coyotes and bringing them in. We just needed to figure out how to get it on film. We were pleasantly surprised to get 3 decent hunts on camera that weekend. This is when we first realized that we might just have a chance filming coyotes hunts.

The first hunt you will see was on a coyote hunting stand that we had made several times in the past. We would always get coyotes to come off of the huge flat land in front of us. We usually would spot them from a distance and have plenty of time to adjust to the coyotes approach. Well since we had a camera the coyote had to show up from our side. You guessed it, he spotted us before we spotted him. Uriah Wurst actually heard the coyote spinning out in the rocks while the coyote was retreating. Once I got my bearings and found the coyote in my scope it was on a dead run and over 280 yards away. I let a round fly and stalled it out. It was a nice size coyote. They seem to be hardier in the mountains. Our theory is that the harsh winters kill off the weak. Once breeding season hits there are only strong genetics left.

The second hunt was very surprising. We had drove through a small draw and noticed two coyotes sitting on top of a hill. They were hunkered down and were watching our pickup’s every move. We thought it was a long shot, but decided to drive farther up the draw and get out of their site. We then walked to the north and entered another draw. This would be the back side of the hill they had been watching us from. Once we sounded the coyote call we were blown away by the fast response. The same two coyotes were headed straight for us. We were perched on a side hill in good camo, but let’s face it, we were two bumps on a hill. You will get a kick out of watching this coyote hunting video. The first coyote came in close enough to see us and hackles up. It was convinced we weren’t right, but it obviously didn’t know we were human. You will see this hunt is very dramatic. We hadn’t started using a tri-pod yet, but there is still some good footage. Uriah did a great job pulling this one off with the video camera.

The third hunt was right before dark and Uriah Wurst was behind the gun and I Lance Benson was behind the camera. We had called for quite a while. Both of us had given up and were pulling off our face mask. We were even talking and expressing our disapointment that we couldn’t get one more coyote on film. During this time our e-call was still running full blast. It wasn’t long and we spotted a huge male coyote coming in hard. You will enjoy the dramatic shot Uriah makes on this coyote.

Thanks for watching our early coyote hunt!
