Coyote Hunting Video 1 with Bucking The Odds

Our first video was shot less than two years ago. I love watching it from time to time as a reminder of the challenges we faced starting out. Uriah and I were having such a good time hunting coyotes that we decided to film it. What a great way to capture our memories. After all the only thing better than a picture is a video.The first step was deciding we wanted to film our hunts. We didn’t know what the next steps were. My first big mistake was taking my small compact video camera out in the field. I thought this was a logical choice and should get the job done. Well I was wrong. The footage was shaky and the zoom capability was very poor. I think I still have the footage somewhere, but we never shared it with anyone.

After realizing your are only as good as your tools I purchased a nicer camera. Once we started getting some coyotes on film, and publishing some of them to YouTube, we started to get some criticism. We had comments like “Get a tri-pod”, “Poor quality” etc… Uriah and I were at first offended but wanted t do better. After that it was personal. Uriah started asking the Pro’s in the coyote hunting community to take a look at our YouTube videos. They were professional but their criticism was even harsher. The next thing we were told is that if you want to progress in the industry your camera has to be High Definition. This is when I realized that this new camera I purchased was now obsolete for what we were taking a big interest in.

After purchasing a new High Definition Camera we were still told “Get a tri-pod”. Uriah and I were filming coyote hunts and were very confused. We were getting coyotes on film and were getting decent footage. The thing we noticed was coyotes came in from all angles and were very hard to even find in the camera. We just couldn’t understand how a person hunting coyotes could set behind a clunky tri-pod and get a coyote on film. After all we were fiming with total freedom and weren’t getting it done.

The first time we got a good kill on film we were doing back flips. You can’t imagine how many times these attempts didn’t go right. There were times when the coyote came in from the right angle, the hunter made the shot, only to hear the camera man say “I forgot to push record”. After quite a bit of practice we started having some moderate success but what really helped us out is when MOJO Outdoors came to Colorado to hunt with us. Mike Morgan and Terry Denman truely spent quality time with us to show us how the professionals do it. This meant we had to spend some more money on equipment. I can tell you this much. The videos increased in quality by 10 folds.

Filming coyotes is much like learning to hunt them. It takes a lot of practice. Once you get it you get it, but don’t think for a minute that you wont still make mistakes. We are having a great time doing it and that is all that matters.
