Coyote hunting is a sport the whole family can enjoy. When taking the younger generation out to call in some coyotes make sure they are dressed properly so they can better handle the adverse conditions. You also want to pack plenty of snacks and water. The kids aren’t as likely to enjoy suffering like their crazy parents are. We can be a lot more focused on the hunt than the children. Also make sure they are wearing good camouflage to blend into the terrain, kids can get restless so the better they blend in the more likely it will hide their movement.
Before getting into a spot that you know has a good coyote population it is always best to set up a couple times before in a less desired area to work out any of the kinks like restlessness and loud talking. Teach stand etiquette to the youngster before hitting the coyote honey hole/s.
It is also good to get your son or daughter their own calls to practice on. This will prevent your favorite custom predator call from getting ruined or all slobbery, plus they enjoy it and once they are able to blow the correct tune it is one less thing you have to do
Coyote Hunting can be far more exciting than other types of hunting for kids, because you make multiple stands and see a lot of country. Make sure they understand and respect firearms before taking them to the field. It is your job to make sure they are safe .
Remember to be safe, patient, and most of all have fun!!

Good point! I am very jealous of you dad’s that have the fortune to take your kids out hunting. I love my daughter but she is definitely a girly girl, that doesn’t have much interest in sitting out in the sagebrush. LOL!
Lance, i have two girls and i know what you mean. I say were going hunting somewhere and all they want to know is
if there’s a mall nearby. They were great hunting until they reach late teens…
There really is nothing more enjoyable than taking my wife and 4 kids out hunting, camping, fishing and just being able to be with them when they got their first kill or who caught the biggest fish that day. It’s always been my most favorite memories and still is. Family is what makes my life worth living.
Lance, I’d almost agree with you, but I’ve met your daughter; a bright and beautiful young lady. From what I can tell, she holds the same compassion for her father as I’m sure he holds for her. She may not like getting out in the field in camouflage and NO make-up, but I think she would for dear old dad; as do I also think dear old dad would put down his gun and calls and let her paint his finger nails.
All the while with a gleam of love showing, that only a child and parent can share!
No can do on painted fingernails!
BUT DADDY!!!
Well, then again, I’m sure she knows how to get dear old dad to give her some extra spending money.
Good read! I spend alot of time with my family. But for some reason they are just not interested in walking around for hours in the snow, mud, and cold. Then sit comepletly still for 20-30 mins. and not seeing anything most of the time. I just can’t figure these women out!
I love this…..Great tip!
This is some great advice. I wish that there had been a forum like BTO, and someone as talented as John to give advice when my boys were young. I will have to put this to use when I take my scouts out coyote calling.
Thanks John and Lance.
Thanks for writing this John. My Son and I have spent most of his life either Hunting or Fishing together. I will always cherish the time we spend together. From the time He was 6 or 7 years old, I have taken him with me, Although he is now 26 years old everytime I hit the woods or the lake he is by My side…….. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Great Read——-My son hunts with me when he can but work and his own family takes up most of his time–wish I would have spent more time with my Girls and Grand kids–but after Nam I was mostly a loner–time fly’s fast , your doing Great John enjoying your family–I’m Proud of you Buddy thanks for sharing————-SB
Great stuff man!
The best memories of my life are hunting/fishing with my family. I hope to pass this on to my children!! I try to take them and my wife on all my hunts with me.
My wife has to constantly remind me that it is supposed to be fun….don’t wear ‘em out. apparently It’s kinda like ice cream… it’s good but they can only eat so much ’till they get a brain freeze!
Great advice. I have 7 girls that will all be hunters. So true about making sure they stay warm and have snacks. We usually do not keep junky snacks at home, so I take them to the store before the hunt so they can pick anything out. I also spend extra on the kids to make sure their cloths keep them warm and break the wind.
I took my oldest daughter out of school on this last Friday here in Colorado to shoot coyotes and meet the ranchers. I do not think it got above 25 on the plains here, and it was snowing some. On our third stand I called one in, but it was circling and picked up our scent, so she took a long shot and hit it which spun it around for a bit, but it got away. I called in another yote, but she missed the 35 yard shot. She said, lets go to the shooting range some more, then we can hunt more coyotes. We get really good father daughter time. We had a great time, she met and talked with the ranchers, she hands the ranchers a small gift of special jellies and crackers, and I give them the whisky. She is not only learning about being a good hunter, but good people skills.
Sometimes my girls fuss about hunting, but I let them know they have to try it first before they can say they do not like it. I had a younger daughter that was very adamant every day for about a month to me for not shooting a deer. Well after I shot it and quickly made jerky with it that she enjoyed, she asked me the following Monday morning while I was getting ready for work if I could shoot another one, apparently we were out of jerky.
When hunting or camping, I make sure to keep the talks fun and never yell or judge.
I always take the kids when I talk with the ranchers, some ranchers up in elk country lets the kids shoot the cow elk for free. My son shot 4 elk this way over the years.
My wife will not hunt, she is from NY, I have asked so many times. I bought her a jeep this last year, now she will go out at least. I asked again about hiking, she said that sounds fun, she paused a moment while the wheels were turning, and asked if I was bringing a gun on the hikes. I said yes, but it was only to protect us if something came into the call while we were resting. I could not hide the smile on my face.

Now that’s funny! Sounds like you have a great family. Your a lucky man. Having a daughter that will hunt coyotes with the old man is cool stuff!
haha i did the same thing with my girl friend except with squirles haha i had her run around and scare them out. i had to tell her id take her to a real nice restraunt so i could shoot “the cute little things that had done no harm to me” as she calls them lol
My daughter hunted with me up until she became a young woman & found out that boys weren’t as “icky & yucky” as she’d thought when she was younger. Couple years later, she learned to drive & that was the end of hunting w/ ol’ Dad… :- (
She’s still got a scar on her eyebrow from not listening to me when I told her to “hold that slug gun tight against your shoulder or the scope will bite ya!!”
I gotta tell this story, though…Her first duck hunt, she shot 6 ducks in 2 shots…A flock of 6 bluewing teal came bustin’ in….She dumped 3 with the first shot, the other 3 swung around for another pass..She splashed them with the next shot. The next day, she busted 2 green wings with one shot. I was so proud… I’ve never seen anybody splash a limit in 2 shots, except for my daughter…
These memories have etched so much happiness into my soul–they’ll keep me smiling & grateful clear thru my rocking chair years….
I need a second opinion on whats the best weather to coyote hunt in?
I just go when time allows, but the best time is when they have been forced to hole up. If you have a real windy couple of days or two day blizzard, the first day with a break in the weather is ideal. They will be hungry.
I am very fortunate to have a 15 1/2 year old daughter that loves to hunt, fish and 4 wheel with me. She has been hunting with me since she was about 8. She often talks of wanting to hunt with her little brother (hes 4 1/2). I cant wait until the three of us can hunt together. Now if we can just get mama involved…. Good hunting everyone!! Be safe.
good read guys i was to busy chasing a dollar when my kids where young working all that i could and i regret it now my daughter never wanted to hunt and i didnt start taking my son until he was around 13 you dont realize how fast time passes when you have children i now am raising my great neice and she just turned 4 years old last month and is quite a little tom boy she likes to fish and i am going to take her yote hunting this winter along with my son who likes to hunt with me when work permits him. i have four grandchildren but they live to far away to get spend much time with but my youngest son lives just across the yard from me and his girlfreind hopefully soon wife will be giving birth to my fifth grandbaby in november they will know in a couple of weeks if it is a boy or girl but whichever i will spend lots of time with him or her its funny how the older you get you learn to slow down and enjoy the more imprtant things in life. my wife loves to fish and camp but i cant and she will come to deer camp but i cant get her to shoot game its strange because she will clean and cut up a deer after i kill and quarter it go figure lol.
Hey John,
I love the improvised Kid Camo! They out grow their clothes so quick it’s tough to keep them in camo, I think you found the solution, nice work and great article as well.
I have taken my kids Coyote hunting before both were even three. Not much luck early on in the coyote department when we started out but we have warmed up a bit lately. Even when it’s in the single digits and below zero windchill I have a hard time getting out in the field without them tagging along. One other thing is make sure the Pee Breaks are done before starting to call. It’s kind of dishartening to be holding your boys little we-we and watching a Coyote coming to your call and knowing you can’t do nothing about it unless you want him to get saturated. Speaking of which I found a cleaver way to to help little boys out when they need to Pee and have lots of layers on. Get a Transmission Funnel (long spout) Unzip pull it out and let it fly this works great , no moving him around with the jet stream anymore.
I started taking my son hunting when he was 2 years old. I have pictures of him holding a squirrel that is as long as he was tall. We hunted everything, squirrel, deer, ducks, geese, and rabbits. Caleb is now 19 1/2 and would rather go coyote hunting with dad than hanging with friends on the main drag. Thanks to hunting we have an extremely close relatoinship that I truely cherish.
Take your kids, boys or girls, hunting from the earliest age you can and raise them in it. You can not go wrong that way!
That is refreshing to hear. Thanks for sharing!
I go hunting by myself beacuase dad moves to much and so do sister and i have caslled one up then another one poped up behind me but they went away and like to hunt with me.
